この度CLEAR GALLERY TOKYOでは、AKIINOUEキュレーションによるグループ展「In Your City」を開催いたします。
本展では、六本木という大都市を舞台に、詫摩昭人、Tat Ito(タット・イトウ)、Nimyu(ニミュ)、John Gall(ジョン・ゴール)の4人のアーティストそれぞれが、多種多様な背景、文化、視点から想像する「都市」を、作品を通して表現します。パンデミック、戦争、富の格差などによる社会不安に苛まれる今現在でも、力強い輝きを持ったアーティスト達が生み出すその自由な「都市」は、やがて一つの「世界」に生まれ変わり、私たちの心を明るく照らします。
詫摩昭人は、1966年、熊本県に生まれ、現在神奈川県にスタジオを構えるアーティストです。作品タイトルでもある「逃走の線」は、詫摩が私淑するフランスの哲学者ジル・ドゥルーズ(Gilles Deleuze)が提唱した、二項対立をすり抜けるコンセプトの絵画シリーズです。ここで用いられる「逃走」にはネガティヴな要素はなく、「解放」あるいは「出発」といったポジティブなアクションです。また「線」には「回路」の意味も重ねられており、刷毛のストロークで一瞬にして生じる無数の線状は、管理され、硬直化した現代社会のシステムにノイズを入れると同時に、人間性の回復へと接続する回路をも表象しています。
タット・イトウは愛知県名古屋市生まれ、現在は東京を拠点に活動しているアーティストです。物語や感情を伝える手段としての芸術の役割に魅了され、古代エジプトの壁画、キリスト教の写本やイスラム教のミニチュア、東洋の絵巻物や屏風から日本の漫画など、古今東西様々な芸術的文化を自身の作品に反映させています。東洋の伝統芸能を思わせる緻密な筆の技術に、西洋のアカデミックな美学要素を融合し、時間や距離を超えて文化的なギャップを橋渡しするイトウの芸術的観点は、絶えず変化する文化環境の視覚的なメタファーを構築しています。
中国に生まれ、北京の中央美術学院でBFAを取得、後にニューヨーク・アカデミー・オブ・アート⼤学院を卒業したニミュは、現在東京を拠点に活動するアーティストです。ニミュは、ペインティング、ビデオ、インスタレーションなど様々なメディアを通して、社会を構成する形の見えないさまざまな情報を複合的に捉えようとする、人間の習性について考えます。ニミュの作品の中にしばしば登場する色鮮やかで凛とした異形な生物、植物、食物に私たちは魅了され、描かれているものが何であるのか、作家は何を伝えようとしているのか、無意識的に理解したいと思うようになります。その行為は、日々受け取る情報を理解、処理しようとしている私たちの姿そのものであり、ニミュの仕掛けるトリックであります。
ジョン・ゴールは、主に本の表紙のデザインで知られるアメリカのグラフィックデザイナー・アーティストです。これまで30年以上にわたり、デイブ・エガーズ、村上春樹、ウラジミール・ナボコフなどの著名な作家のために制作した本の表紙デザインで主に知られており、Alfred A Knopf、Nonesuch Records、Criterion Collectionなどにおける受賞歴のある仕事でも注目されています。ゴールの独自のコラージュへのアプローチは、シンプルな形とテクニックを使用して本来のコラージュのプロセスを解体し、デザインの概念的および視覚的な制約から解放されることを可能にしています。今展では、「About About New York」シリーズと題された、ゴールの制作史最大サイズのオリジナルコラージュ作品を9点発表します。
本展のオープニング・レセプションは、11月24日(金) 17:00 - 19:00 にCLEAR GALLERY TOKYOにて開催致します。

詫摩昭人 Akihito Takuma
1966年熊本県生まれ、現在神奈川を拠点に制作。
1993-1994年渡欧しシルクロ・デ・べラス・アルテス マドリード総合芸術センター在籍。現在、和光大学芸術学科教授（絵画担当）。
2004年より油彩作品〈逃走の線〉を制作。2005年兵庫国際絵画コンペティション優秀賞を受賞。国内外の多くの展覧会で作品を発表している。兵庫県立美術館、いわき市立美術館、色彩美術館などに作品が収蔵されている。
近年の主な展覧会に「Akihito Takuma 」Galerie Benjamin Eck（ミュンヘン、ドイツ、2020）、「た・び・て・ん」（兵庫県立美術館、2022)、「逃走の線 Color 」（Yoshiaki Inoue Gallery Gallery、2022)、「逃走の線 勝負は一瞬で決まる、ただし負けることが多いのですが」（CADAN 有楽町、企画：Yoshiaki Inoue Gallery、2023）など。
タット・イトウ Tat Ito
1978年名古屋市生まれ、現在東京在住。
2015年アカデミーオブアートユニバーシティ・サンフランシスコ卒業後、2018年ニューヨークアカデミーオブアート修了。
Joshua Liner Gallery(ニューヨーク)、Above Second Gallery(香港)での個展や、Anne Mosseri-Marlio Gallery(スイス)、Art Southampton など国内外で作品を発表している。
近年の主な展覧会に「知識の実とヤシの葉」 (dual exhibition、CLEAR GALLERY TOKYO、2021）、「風の強い空と捕虫網と虫メガネ」（TAKU SOMETANI GALLERY 、2022)、「Polyreality」（Hive Center for Contemporary Art、Beijing、2023)など。
ニミュ Nimyu
中国北京市生まれ。 北京の中央美術学院を卒業後、ニューヨークアカデミーオブアートにて大学院修了。 絵画、映像、アニメーションなど様々なメディアを用いて、情報主導型の社会とその情報の信憑性をテーマに作品を制作している。
2012年ニューヨークのFuse Galleryで個展デビュー以降、2015、2016年、2017年と北京のMOUart Galleryで個展を開催。 Atami Project Art Grant を2度受賞したニミューの作品は、White Rabbit Museum in Sydney（オーストラリア）やThe Scope Art Fair Basel（スイス）、Masur Museum of Art（ロサンゼルス）、Urban Art and Media Organization（ドイツ）、Jack the Pelican Presents、Limner Gallery、Sloan Fine Art（ニューヨーク）、An Yun Art and Design Center（中国）、SxV Museum of Modern Art（中国）など世界中で発表されている。近年の展覧会に「知識の実とヤシの葉」 (dual exhibition、CLEAR GALLERY TOKYO、2021)、2022年と2023年には、TAKU SOMETANI GALLERY(東京)で個展「Invisible Ark; Where is the Other Shore You Want to Reach?」と「Ài ài」を開催。
ジョン・ゴール John Gall
アメリカのグラフィックデザイナー・アーティスト
エイブラハムブックスのクリエイティブディレクター/デザイナー/編集者を務める。Alfred A Knopfのクリエイティブ・ディレクターでもあり、また過去25年にわたりノンサッチ・レコードのために数十の優れたアルバムジャケットのデザインを担当。多くの著名な作家のブックカバーをデザインし、アメリカン・インスティテュート・オブ・グラフィック・アーツから50以上の賞を受賞している。2000年の後半よりコラージュ作品の制作をスタート。デザインにおける新しい視覚言語の探求は、実験を重ね、独自のスタイルを確立し、それ以来進化し続けている。
本展で発表される新シリーズ「About About New York」は、ニューヨークでかき集めた素材だけを使用して作成されている。作品は文字通りの意味や物語的な要素を持たず、印刷媒体でのニューヨークの表現方法を再構築し、コレージュされたイメージの対比は、ニューヨークの生活の密度と二律背反を反映している。五つ星のレストランの外にホットドッグのカートが、ブティックホテルの隣にホームレスがいたり、プラスチック袋とヴィトンの荷物、路上ミュージシャンとカーネギーホールなど、変化し続ける都市での、変化し続ける偶然が並べられている。
CLEAR GALLERY TOKYO is pleased to present, AKIINOUE curates a group exhibition, "In Your City".
In this exhibition, four artists, Akihito Takuma, Tat Ito, Nimyu, and John Gall, will each express their interpretation of the "city" from various backgrounds, cultures, and perspectives in the context of the urban setting of Roppongi, a major metropolis. Even in the current times marked by social anxieties stemming from the pandemic, conflicts, wealth disparities, these artists, with their powerful brilliance, will create a liberated "city" that will eventually transform into one "world," illuminating our hearts.
Akihito Takuma, born in Kumamoto, Japan, currently has a studio in Kanagawa. His series titled "Lines of Flight," which is also the title of his artworks, explores the concept proposed by the French philosopher Gilles Deleuze, whom Takuma admires. The term "escape" used here carries no negative connotations but rather signifies "liberation" or "departure." The "lines" also encompass the meaning of "circuits," and the countless linear forms created by brush strokes not only inject noise into the regulated and rigid systems of contemporary society but also symbolize a connection to the restoration of human nature.
Tat Ito, born in Nagoya, Aichi, is currently based in Tokyo. Fascinated by the role of art as a means to convey stories and emotions, Ito incorporates various artistic cultures from around the world into his works, drawing inspiration from sources as diverse as ancient Egyptian murals, Christian manuscripts, Islamic miniatures, traditional Asian scrolls, and Japanese manga. His meticulous brushwork, reminiscent of Eastern traditional performing arts, combined with Western academic aesthetic elements, acts as a visual metaphor to bridge cultural gaps transcending time and space, thus constructing visual metaphors within ever-evolving cultural environments.
Nimyu, born in China, obtained a BFA from the Central Academy of Fine Arts and later graduated from the New York Academy of Art. Currently based in Tokyo, Nimyu works across various media, including painting, video, and installation, in her quest to comprehensively capture the invisible array of information that shapes society. Vibrant and graceful unconventional life forms, plants, and foodstuffs often appear in Nimyu's works, sparking curiosity about their essence and the artist's intended message. This very curiosity mirrors our unconscious quest to understand and process the daily information we encounter, making it a trick concealed within Nimyu's artistry.
John Gall is an American graphic designer and internationally exhibited artist. He is known primarily for his book cover designs for such authors as Dave Eggers, Haruki Murakami and Vladimir Nabokov, as well as award-winning work for Alfred A Knopf, Nonesuch Records, and the Criterion Collection. Gall's distinctive approach to collage involves using simple forms and techniques to deconstruct the collage process, allowing him to break free from the conceptual and visual constraints of design. In this exhibition, Gall will present a series titled "About About New York," featuring nine original collage works, some of which are the largest in his career.

Akihito Takuma
Born in Kumamoto, Japan, in 1966, Currently working in Kanagawa.
1993 Completed the postgraduate course at Shiga University
Professor, Department of Painting, Wako University.
He has been creating a series titled "Lines of Flight," since 2004 and was awarded the 10th Anniversary of Post Earthquake Restoration Hyogo International Competition of Painting, Second Prize. Takuma has presented his works at numerous exhibitions both domestically and internationally. His pieces are in the collections of The Hyogo Prefectural Museum of Art, Iwaki City Art Museum, Color Museum.

Tat Ito
Born in Nagoya, Japan, in 1978. Currently living and working in Tokyo.

Nimyu
Born in China, Currently living and working in Tokyo.
She received her BFA in Painting from the Central Academy of Fine Arts, Beijing, and an MFA in Painting from the New York Academy of Art, New York.
Using various media, including painting, video, and animation, her work reflects on our information-driven society and questions the credibility of the information.
In 2023 and 2022, Nimyu held her solo exhibition “Ài ài" and “Invisible Ark; Where is the Other Shore You Want to Reach?" at Taku Sometani Gallery in Tokyo. Prior to that, in 2017, she had another solo exhibition "If You Ask Me" at MOUart Gallery in Beijing. In 2015 and 2016, Nimyu had solo shows titled "Iro Iro" and "The Wound of The Bond" respectively, held at MOUart Gallery. Her debut exhibition, "Refracted Beings," occurred in 2012 at Fuse Gallery in New York. A two-time recipient of the Japan Atami Project Art Grant and Residency, Nimyu’s work has been exhibited at various notable venues worldwide, including the White Rabbit Museum in Sydney, Australia; The Scope Art Fair Basel, Switzerland; “Take Home A Nude'' at Sotheby’s, New York; Masur Museum of Art, Monroe, LA; Urban Art and Media Organization, Munich, Germany; Sloan Fine Art, New York; Jack the Pelican, Brooklyn, NY; Limner Gallery, Hudson, NY; AN+ Art & Design Center in Shenzhen and SxV Museum of Modern Art in Qingdao, China amongst others.
John Gall
American graphic designer/artist
Gall was the creative director/designer/Editor of Abrams Books and the creative director of Alfred A. Knopf, and he has designed dozens of albums for Nonesuch Records over the past 25 years. He has designed book covers for many renowned authors and has received over 50 awards from the American Institute of Graphic Arts.
He started collage work in the late 2000s. His exploration of a new visual language in design involves repeated experimentation, leading to the establishment of a distinctive style that has continued to evolve ever since.
This new series is called “About About New York”. The collages were created using only New York specific source material: books, magazines, newspapers, souvenir posters, and items from the collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, amongst many others. The work is non-literal and non-narrative and recontextualizes how New York has been represented in print.
The juxtaposition of images reflects the density and dichotomies of life in New York, where you will find a hot dog cart outside of a five star restaurant or homelessness existing next to a boutique hotel. Plastic bags and Vuitton luggage. Street musicians and Carnegie Hall. All existing side by side with ever shifting serendipity in an ever changing city.
