"off the wall (a thing on a wall) " は、CLEAR GALLERY TOKYOが、六本木のギャラリー以外の様々な場所で作品を展示するプロジェクトです。

第三回となる「月刊 中村穣二」 展は、東京・恵比寿の、築60年の民家を改装したオルタナティヴスペース「などや恵比寿」にて、中村穣二による制作過程の公開と、その作品の展示を、1ヶ月の会期中 4回に渡って発表していきます。

今回の展示では画家として行う基本的な動き、
「絵を描く」～ 「飾る」 ～ 「観てもらう」
という流れそのものを作品として見せる事が出来たらと考えました。

しかし画家が絵を描くだけですから、コンセプトがあるパフォーマンスとも違う。
ライブペインティングとして場を与えてもらってるのとも違うので、それも少し違う。

どう言うとしっくりくるのか…

「画家のある一ヶ月」

画家のとある一ヶ月がそこにある。という感じでしょうか。

展示のピークというものも、
描いている時なのか、完成して展示された時なのか、
はたまたピークなど一切感じる事のない淡々としたもので終わるのか。

「そこにはただ画家の一ヶ月があったのだ」

なんてまたロマンチックな感じにしようとしていますが、そんな気持ちで行う展示です。

中村穣ニは、指を使い（最近は筆も使っている）絵を描いている。
身体的動きが残された手跡は、作家がカンヴァスに向かい合った時間を雄弁に語り、その躍動感あるストロークと物質感のあるマチエールから、観者は作家の対峙した緊張感を受け取り、より鮮明に現実世界を提示させられる。しかし同時に、中村の描くユーモラスで捉えきれない形は、それぞれがなにかの形象を思い起こす余白を有しており、心地よい郷愁と自己探求への想像力を喚起させるだろう。

「月刊 中村穣二」では、描くという行為自体を発表する。
中村とカンヴァスとのやり取りを対象として描かれた絵画作品と、その絵を描いている作家自身が、観者にとっての対象となることで、主体と客体との関係が曖昧になっていく。通行人はガラス越しに中村の制作過程を目にすることができ(同時に配信される)、
その姿は、本人の描く絵の中の無秩序で自由な対象と重なっていく。
中村の言う「画家のある一ヶ月」は、本人の思惑から離れ、日常の景色に突如現れた不定形な存在として、誰かの意識に接触しているかもしれない。

In this exhibition, I hope to showcase the basic process of an artist creating a work of art through the steps of "painting," "displaying," and "viewing" as the work of art itself.

However, an artist can only paint, making this different from performance arts that have a concept. This is also slightly different from situations where I'm given the opportunity to paint something live. I'm not sure how I should describe this...

"A month in the life of an artist"

I suppose this can be thought of as something like "a month in the life of an artist."

Is the peak of an exhibition when the artist is painting,
or is it when the work is completed and has been displayed?
Or does the exhibition close in a dispassionate way without the artist experiencing any emotional peak at all?

"This would be just another month in the life of an artist."
I might be trying to make this sound romantic again, but that's the idea behind this exhibition.

The works of Joji Nakamura are mostly painted using his fingers. The marks created by the artist's fingers echo his physical movements and give voice powerfully to the time he has spent in front of the canvas. Through his dynamic strokes and the corporeal material of the canvas, the audience is exposed to the tensions confronted by the artist and is presented with an even more sobering view of reality. At the same time, however, Nakamura's humorous and elusive forms also serve as a blank slate that conjures certain images in one's mind and which evokes a heartwarming nostalgia as well as a sense of imagination that will invite the audience on a journey of self-discovery.

This exhibition "Monthly Joji Nakamura" showcases the very act of painting itself. The relationship between subject and object becomes ambiguous as both the work that portrays the artist's interactions with the canvas as well as Nakamura himself, the artist who is painting the work, become the focus of the audience.

The audience can observe Nakamura's production process (which will also be broadcasted via a live stream) through a glass wall, where Nakamura's movements are superimposed onto the chaotic and free subject of his painting. "A month in the life of an artist" as Nakamura calls it, may very well come into contact with someone's consciousness as an indeterminate presence that has suddenly emerged amid the landscape of everyday life in a manner that is nothing like what the artist had originally intended.

"off the wall (a thing on a wall) " 

作家の日々の生活の中で生まれた作品は、もっと身近にあって、自由で、刺激的で、多くの言葉を有しています。作品が作家の手を離れ、別の時が刻まれた空間に置かれたとき、ある1枚の絵画が、いつもの景色を変えるかもしれないし、日毎変わる光の色に気づかせてくれるかもしれません。ホワイトキューブの外にある、厳しくも美しい現実世界、その世界を生きる現代の作家と、彼らによって制作された作品がもたらす影響と可能性を探る試みです。

“off the wall (a thing on a wall) ” is a project by CLEAR GALLERY TOKYO to display artworks in various locations outside of the Roppongi gallery. The works, born out of the daily lives of the artists, become closer, freer, more exciting, more talkative. When art is placed away from the hands of its artist, in a different time and a different space, a single painting may take on a different appearance, reflecting the changing light of each day. Hence, the project is an attempt to explore the harsh but beautiful world outside the white cube of the gallery, the artists currently living in that world, and the effects and possibilities of the works they have created.

About nadoya ebisu / "fuyu gallery"

「などや」は、建築ディレクターの岡村俊輔と、テクニカルディレクターの遠藤豊(LUFTZUG)が立ち上げた、芸 術 、 文 化 、 食 、 生 活 な ど 、 多 様 な 発展と変化に対して敏感に作用してゆくことができる場の構築を目指した施設でありコンセプトです。2020 年の始動にあたり、恵比寿 と代々木上原に拠点を置き、いずれもあと数年で取り壊される予定のおよそ 60 年を経た民家を、建物の風合いを残しつつ建築工法のス タディを重ねながら改修を続けています。

”浮遊ギャラリー”は、既存の建物の外壁に、室内と街の中間領域のような開口部を設け、アートやデザインをはじめとする、様々な領域のクリエイティブを発信する目的で開設しました。24時間、いつでも鑑賞が可能。より多くの人々に発信することで、既存の枠組みにとらわれない、物事の別側面や、新たな発想の可能性を提示します。

“nadoya" is a venue and concept established by architectural director Shunsuke Okamura and technical director Yutaka Endo (of LUFTZUG), with the objective to create a place that is sensitive to diversified developments and changes in art, culture, food, and lifestyle. In order to start the project in 2020, both Okamura and Endo have established bases in Ebisu and Yoyogi Uehara - all of which are 60-year-old japanese private houses that otherwise would have been demolished in a few years to come - and are continuing to renovate them while retaining the texture of the buildings and studying construction methods.
