この度 CLEAR GALLERY TOKYO では“New Wave from Taiwan” と題し、新しい時代の女性アーティストShantel LiaoとSharol Xiaoの展覧会を開催いたします。

台湾は想像力に富んだ土地であり、新旧混在しているヴィヴィッドな文化と独自の技術環境を持つ、アジアで最もリベラルな国のひとつです。ミレニアル世代 (1980~2005年頃に生まれ幼い頃からデジタル環境に馴染んだ世代) が、ポスト メイド・イン・台湾 時代の先代達とは全く異なった環境で成長するにつれ、彼ら彼女らの自己認識と独立精神は、アート、ファッション、フィルムなどを通して、積極的に表現されています。

本展では、Shantel Liaoの代表作である、被写体の皮膚に作家自ら書を施し写真に捉えた作品“Calligraphy on the Move” の展示と、Sharol Xiaoは新作のストレートセルフィーの発表と彼女のドキュメンタリーフィルム“I am Sharol” の上映をいたします。また今回の展示に合わせて、台湾の pon ding とclear productionから出版された Sharol の作品集 “be kind, be good, be loving” をローンチいたします。

彼女たちの、自己への探求と開放、また率直な言葉は、今を生きる表現者の宣言として、私たちに強く響かせます。

“芸術を口実に好きなことをしていました。
私の作品は芸術と性的欲求のつながりを利用したもの。
後に芸術と欲求の間に明確な区別がないと知ります。
むしろ無いほうがいい。どちらも人間性の一部だから。
そして徐々に自分を受け入れる。
これこそ私。
感情をカメラに放り込み　私の一部を瞬間的に記録する。
感情を発散させる場所。
ネガフィルムはその瞬間に集中させてくれる。”

CLEAR GALLERY TOKYO is pleased to inform you that we are going to hold an exhibition “New Wave from Taiwan” by two artists of modern generation, Shantel Liao and Sharol Xiao.

Taiwan is a fertile land, a window on contemporary culture, and modern technology in unsettled times. One of the most liberal countries in Asia with vivid contemporary design and a unique technological environment, it provides a glimpse into the future of Asia. As Millennials grow up in a completely different environment from their predecessors in the post Made-in-Taiwan era, more genuine, self-aware and independent identities are proactively portrayed from philosophical, social and psychological perspectives, and are expressed through visual culture, arts, fashion, photography and film.

“New Wave from Taiwan” provides the world a completely new point of view onto Asia. In this exhibition, Shantel Liao is going to display “Calligraphy on the Move”, one of her major works which composes calligraphy directly on skin of a subject, and Sharol Xiao is going to display new series of straight selfie and screen “I am Sharol”a documentary film of her. The exhibit also introduces “be kind, be good, be loving”which is a collection book of Sharol’s art work published by pon ding, Taiwan. Their honest phrases are so inquiring and expansive that touch audience’s heart as a statement from artists of this modern era.

“I’ve done whatever wanted to do using art as my excuse.
My works show the connection between art and sex.
Later, noticed there is no definitive discrimination between the two.
Well, I prefer no. Art and sex, both are important parts of human nature.
Then, I gradually accept myself.
This is the me.
Throw my emotion in the camera, and record an instantaneous part of me.
A place to radiate emotion.
Negative film helps me to concentrate to the moment.”

今回の展示に合わせて、台湾の pon-ding から出版された Sharol の作品集 ”be kind, be good, be loving” をローンチいたします。

Sharol Xiao による写真集 “be kind, be good, be loving”を、pon ding (Taipei)と、Clear Production（Tokyo）より出版いたします。 Sharolは日々の生活を続けるため、憂鬱で不安定な感情を開放させるために、コンパクトカメラを手に自分自身を撮りはじめました。 他者の目を気にせず、シャッターが落ちるその一瞬に集中し、繊細な身体の動きや視線を通して、その時の感情を発散させるSharolのストレートセルフィーは、“これが私だ” と言い切る、表現者としての強さと煌めきを宿し、彼女の存在を強く焼きつけています。

Pon ding from Taiwan and clear production from Tokyo publish a photograph collection book “be kind, be good, be loving” by Sharol Xiao. In order to be continuing to live her life as herself and to release her melancholy and unhinged emotion, she began taking a pictures of herself using an ordinary point-and-shoot camera. Her straight selfie which is condensed her temporary emotion through the exquisite body movement and the look as a result of concentration to the moment the shutter clicked regardless of other’s sights has a strength and sparkle as an artist, and engrave her existence.

初写真集「I am Sharol」がリリースされて以来、彼女の撮る”ストレートセルフィー”を通して、シャロルは次第に知られるようになりました。彼女にとって、身体は武器ではなく、光と影を映し表現するための手段です。 彼女は市販のコンパクトカメラを用います。そのレンズは彼女の生活を露わに切り取るだけではなく、彼女を、彼女自身でさえ想像しなかったところへと連れて行きます。若さと成熟が共存する彼女が大胆に撮ってゆく写真群は、彼女が自ら選び進んできた足跡であり、見落とされがちな細やかな思考と脚色されていない生の感情との間を、自分に正直に探究してきた形跡でもあります。シャロルは自身のヌード・セルフィーによって、人々の視線を受け止め、また読者は、ページをめくるたびに、自身の感情を露わにさせられるのです。

シャロル：
過去数年間の私のすべてが、この本にあります。私は、世間一般で基準とされる”美”には応えることはないと思っていますが、そもそも”美しい”とは何なのでしょうか？ 誰か１人によって定義できるものではないし、答えは1つではありません。自らの身体と意識と繋がることができたなら、そこに美しさがあるのだと思います。常に人を愛することは、私自身への期待であり、自分を愛することでもあります。

シャロルの作品をみた時、最初はその姿や形、色彩、画面の使い方に心が惹かれていましたが、そのうちに、この本の構造のようにに、身体という概念の先にある美しさや、ありのままの真実を見つけることができたのです。人間の性質そのものが試されるこの時代において、こんなにも無垢で、おぼろげで、小さな光がきらきらと光っている…こんな素敵なことを気づかせてくれた、この感覚はとても素晴らしいものです。

Since the release of her first photobook, “I am Sharol,” artist Sharol has become gradually known by people through her unpretentious “straight selfies”; body is not her weapon, but her way of depicting light and darkness. She chooses inexpensive point-and-shoot camera as her tool, and the lens not only strips and dissects her real life piece by piece, but also has taken her to unexpected places; youth and maturity can be simultaneously found in her, and taking pictures extensively is the perceptive path she has chosen, honestly exploring the often overlooked sensitive thoughts and desires among raw emotions. She takes on all people’s gazes with her nude selfies, yet she left readers feeling fully exposed when flipping through pages.

Sharol:
“My life stories over the past few years are all in this book. I know I will never live up to the world’s standard of beauty, but what is beauty? It cannot be defined by one person, and there shouldn’t be just one answer. As long as you find a way to communicate with your own body and consciousness, it is beauty. Always be a loving person is my expectation for myself, as well as the love for myself.”

“Early on in her works, I saw the visible forms, structures, and colors. Later, I saw the beauty beyond the body, just like the structure of the book, naked truth. In this era that puts human nature to the test, there also is such a pure, dim, and weak light glittering; this feels great.”

The alamak! project was established to give a platform to emerging creative talent in Asia and explore the work of Asian artists and designers as a driving force behind future art and design movements by Yoichi Nakamuta (CLEAR GALLERY TOKYO, Founder) and Henry K.T. Hsiao (nbt.studio). To provoke an appraisal of contemporary creativity in the region is the intention of this project.

alamak! projectによりキュレーションされた“Taiwan New Wave”展は、2019年のパリにて初めて発表されました。今回のCLEAR GALLERY TOKYOでの展示は、パリでの展示を東京にて再キュレーションしたものです。

“Taiwan New Wave” curated by alamak! project was first held in Paris, 2019. “New Wave from Taiwan” is an exhibition which re-curated in Tokyo respecting to “Taiwan New Wave”.
