“We must bring salvation back”

堀内結は、多様な生き方を体現している女性の姿とともに緑豊かな自然を、インクや水彩を用いた絵画、イラスト作品として展開してきました。近年は、雑誌のイラストからショップやホテルの壁画といった大型作品まで幅広い活動をしていますが、なかでも、緑の中に佇む女性の後ろ姿を描いた水彩画シリーズ『FROM BEHIND』は堀内の主要な作品として継続して描かれてきています。本シリーズに登場する女性の容姿や場所は様々であり、「彼女たち」の姿には、堀内自身の心に残る風景と死生観が同居しています。本シリーズのきっかけとなったのは、ロンドンの古い墓地の中で外部から忘れ去られたようなうっそうした緑の中に浮かび上がる友人の後ろ姿でした。堀内はそのイメージを反復するなかで、「彼女たち」の姿は、堀内の身近な亡き女性たちの姿と重なるようになり、彼女たちを偲ぶようなパーソナルな行為としても続けられてきました。

本展『We must bring salvation back (お互いに救いの心を取り戻そう) 』は、本シリーズで描かれてきた女性だけでなく、その空間に広がる関係性を新たに紡ぎ出すような新作を発表します。タイトルは、制作中にラジオから流れてきたジャクソンファイブの曲『I’ ll be there』の冒頭の歌詞からきています。20年以上使っているという古いラジオから流れてきた古い曲は、親しみがあるわけでもないのに、遠く離れた異なる世界から送られてきたメッセージのように思えたと堀内は言います。とくに、冒頭の歌詞である「We must bring salvation back Where there is love I'll be there」は、まさに本シリーズとも繋がる堀内自身の制作と人生における喪失とそこからの救いや回復が交差するような心情を表しているといえるでしょう。私たちは日常的に喪失や別れを重ねながら生きていますが、堀内にとってこのシリーズはそれらと対峙する時間であり、それは本人と亡き人々に向けた救いであると同時に“彼女たち”がまだそこに生き続けているということでもあります匿名的な人物や場所を通して、本展では絵葉書や日記の 1ページのように、遠く彼方に追いやってしまった記憶を思い返したりするような表現が生み出されます。

Using ink and watercolor, Yui Horiuchi depicts lush natural landscapes that foreground female figures embodying diverse ways of life.
Horiuchi's recent works have included magazine illustrations as well as large-scale murals for shops and hotels. Notable among them is her watercolor series "FROM BEHIND" featuring women, all with their backs turned towards naturalistic backgrounds. These women, varying in appearance and the settings against which they are foregrounded, explore Horiuchi's internal landscapes of life, death, and womanhood. Horiuchi was inspired to start this series during a visit with a friend to an old cemetery in London and seeing her friend's figure from behind as if she were floating in the lush greenery. 

This exhibition, "We must bring salvation back," features new works depicting now only women, but the relationships extending into the spaces they inhabit. The title is drawn from a song she listened to while producing these works -- the Jackson 5's "I'll Be There." Horiuchi has said that, listening to songs from a bygone era on an old radio, the lyrics almost felt like messages from a different but familiar world. She was particularly drawn to the opening lines, "we must bring salvation back/Where there is love, I'll be there," in reflecting Horiuchi's own artistic practice in dealing with loss, recovery, and salvation. 

As we constantly face losses and farewells in our everyday lives, Horiuchi hopes to face these trials in her new works by summoning both salvation and eternal presence for the departed. In this exhibition, like pages on a postcard or diary, we hope to invoke new expressions of people and places known and unknown, past and present.
