MADSAKI

Biography

作家として活動を始めて以来、MADSAKI は細密画から大型彫刻やインスタレーションまでその変幻自在なスタイルで我々を魅了して来ました。近年今までの幾何学/抽象的な作風が一変し、キャンバスに描かれる刺激的かつ挑発的な言葉（メッセージ）や名画の模倣が重要な部分を占める様になりましたが、作家としてのスタンスは変わることなく、常に独特な視点から世の中で起きている事象を観察/解釈し、それを再構築しながら新しい意味合いをもたせて昇華させてきました。過去に多くの作家が言葉と戯れ作品を残した様に、MADSAKI の近作に登場する言葉遊びや模倣は単に「社会に対しての悪態」として片付けられるものではなく、「再構成」によって元が持つ記号としての特性を軽々と超越しながら社会を風刺、揶揄します。同時に様々な事柄について我々に考えさせるのです。時に荒々しく描かれたフレーズは鑑賞者に対し「深く考え裏を読むべきなのか、そのまま提示されたものを素直に受け止めるべきなのか」という問いを投げかけます。極端に言えば見ているものが「アート」なのかどうかということすら鑑賞者の価値観にゆだねられます。我々が日々生きていく上で直面する様々な仕組み対し、MADSAKI は作品を通して揺さぶりをかけてくるのです。

Born in Japan, raised in New Jersey, and schooled in New York City, Madsaki’s prolific career began when he traveled to the American south with the Barnstormers̶an influential artist collective.
Through his recent series of‘phrases’created in the past couple of years, MADSAKI portrays a distinct view towards everyday life. Using words related to incidents surrounding him, he reinterprets and reconstructs the spelling, pronunciation sound, and visual apperances into something different. Simular to his precursors, the way MADSAKI plays with images and words through his works can not be categorized simply as a slander. It is a complex method to slash through social/political issues and easily surpassing what the original word simbolize, in an inteligent but humorously ironic way.
